In 1993, Betsy and Dick DeVos became co-chairs of the Education Freedom Fund. It offers private scholarships to students from low-income families in Michigan wishing to attend various schools of their choice. The couple matched a grant given to the fund by Children’s Scholarship Fund so that their foundation takes care of the management costs for the organization. The Betsy and Dick DeVos Family Foundation donates to groups such as Children First America, American Education Reform Council, Christian schools in Michigan and Choices for Children.

About the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation

The foundation aims at serving faithful stewards, helping programs and organizations that deal with arts, community, leadership, education, and justice. Betsy and Dick DeVos note that they can run the group to meet its goals based on the model they received from their parents. It aims at cultivating leadership, leveraging support in the community, and accelerating transformation. The family foundation supports several organizations such as Inner City Christian Federation, West Michigan Aviation Academy, Project Clarity, and DeVos Institute of Arts Management.

Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy note that partnership is crucial to the success of the Family Foundation. The couple further said that most recipient organizations become long-time partners. Usually, five to ten organizations benefit from the support annually. The foundation also values strong relationships made with the society.
